The Elemental Alchemy of Grief
The nitrogen cycle mirrors spiritual transformation by serving as a literal blueprint for profound emotional healing, moving from a state of stable connection through a catastrophic disruption, and ultimately into new growth.
This transformative journey follows four distinct stages that parallel the chemical process of “Atom Seven”:
- The Stable Bond: In nature, nitrogen gas (N₂) is held together by an incredibly strong covalent triple bond, representing a state of pure potential. Spiritually, this represents a stable, enduring, and quiet state of connection, which the author likened to the deep bond shared with their spouse.
- The Disruptive Strike: Because the nitrogen bond is so strong, it requires an immense natural force, such as a lightning strike, to break it apart. Spiritually, this mirrors a devastating, reality-breaking force—like profound grief or loss—that violently separates what was once tightly woven together.
- Fixation and Burial: Once the nitrogen bond is severed, the separated atoms are forced to “fixate” to the earth. The author experienced this stage of the cycle as feeling literally “buried in the ground psychologically, emotionally, spiritually” in the aftermath of their tragedy.
- Reconnection and Flourishing: Just as the fixated nitrogen eventually makes new bonds, grows, and accelerates to “flourish into the DNA of a perceived new thing,” the spiritual process demands the same. From the depths of being buried, the individual slowly transforms, heals, and builds a completely new structural reality out of their fragmented pieces.
