An éminence grise or gray eminence is an undisclosed behind the scenes advisor working in a nonpublic or unofficial capacity. History has often been shaped not just by the figures in the spotlight but by those who whisper in their ears. These convert advisors, known as Éminence grise, a French term meaning “grey eminence,” wield influence without holding official power. Modern leaders still rely on such figures, proving that while times may change, the need for a wise and strategic confidant remains constant.
I often refer to my career as mathematician as a type of Éminence grise role. Not wanting to be seen as a black mathematician or the girl mathematician or the black girl mathematician, I found it easier (less emotionally draining) to work behind the scenes and allow mathematics speak for me. Talk about a Hidden Figure! I signed so many NDAs during my first year in business that I made a NDA clause part of MY standard contract.

The term Éminence grise originates from the early 17th century, famously associated with François Leclerc du Tremblay, a Capuchin monk and close advisor to Cardinal Richelieu, who served as France’s chief minister under King Louis XIII. Though Tremblay never held an official title of power, his influence over Richelieu was immense, earning him the nickname L’Éminence grise. The phrase became synonymous with individuals who manipulate the course of events from behind the scenes.
Throughout history, many figures have played this role, guiding monarchs, presidents, and leaders with their strategic counsel. Rasputin, the mystical advisor to the Russian Romanov family, held sway over Tsarina Alexandra and influenced Russian politics. In more recent times, Henry Kissinger, serving under U.S. Presidents Nixon and Ford, shaped foreign policy decisions that left a lasting global impact. These individuals exemplify the power of the unseen hand steering history.
